Named for: Humboldt River, named in turn for Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859), a German naturalist and explorer.

Winnemucca was named for Winnemucca (c. 1820 – 1882) a Northern Paiute war chief. He was born a Shoshone around 1820 in what would later become the Oregon Territory.
