General Walk Information

Walks are typically 10k (6.2 mi.), often with a 5k option, and may include historic sites, downtown areas, woodland trails, parks and other points of interest. A small fee ($4.00- $6.00) provides for recorded credit and an award (e.g., a medal, patch, button, magnet) for completing the event.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR A WALK: All walks in this brochure are AVA-sanctioned events, for which you can earn IVV Credit. You can register in one of two ways, via:
  1. Physical Start Box (PSB), a portable file box often called a Walk Box, that is located at the Start Point of a walk (such as at a hotel, convenience store, restaurant, etc.), OR
  2. Online Start Box (OSB), a system hosted on the AVA website that provides a complete start box experience.
With either method, you provide your name, “sign” a LIABILITY WAIVER, obtain walk DIRECTIONS/MAP, and pay a small FEE ($4) for IVV credit (stamps indicating place and distance you walked). AWARDS such as patches and medals can be purchased (generally an additional $3) only at walks that are offered through a PSB.

ONLINE START BOX (OSB) Registration: Most of our CVVC walks no longer use a PSB, but rather are offered on a “Web Registration Only” basis (which offers flexibility to walkers and makes it unnecessary for clubs to find trail masters who are able to travel to and manage a PSB for their walk). You register, get directions to the start of the route and trail directions/map, pay, and receive an insert card for your record books all online. These are credit-only events, with no awards.

Go to https://my.ava.org to set up your personal account (takes only 5-10 minutes). Click on New Account, fill out your personal information (including AVA Special Programs), sign the waiver, fund the Event bank via credit/debit card ($4-$100), and you now can log into your account in the OSB system. For each event you complete, you will pay $2 initially to receive a PDF file of walk instructions, and then an additional $2 after you complete the walk to receive another PDF file containing a stamped insert card for your records.

AVOID MIXING OSB and PSB REGISTRATION: For an OSB event that also supports a PSB (our Hartford Capitol Walk is an example), please use only one registration and event completion method. Do not mix and match OSB and PSB methods. For example, do not use the OSB to register and get directions, but then use the PSB at the walk start point to log in, pay the fee and obtain a stamp for your record books. This can lead to confusion in your records and may result in CVVC not getting properly credited for your participation.

IVV CREDIT: All walks are sanctioned events, counting toward IVV (Internationaler Volkssport Verband) achievement awards. You must present an IVV Record Book and completed Start Card for credit. You can walk seasonal and year-round walks for event credit as often as you wish, stamping your books each time.

FEES: Everyone is welcome to participate in these events.

"A" award with IVV Credit $6.00
"B" award with IVV Credit $5.00
IVV Credit ONLY $4.00
"Guest." (no credit) $4.00

A trail can be walked a second time on the same day at no atdditional charge.

DISCLAIMER: Event sponsors shall not be liable or responsible for, and shall be held harmless for and against any and all claims and damages to or loss of property arising out of, or attributed to, the operations of events conducted by the AVA. Every effort will be made by the sponsors to make these events safe and enjoyable.

WHAT IS VOLKSSPORTING?

Volkssport means “sport of the people” in German and originated over 50 years ago in Europe. It involves non-competitive outdoor exercise for people of all fitness levels and ages. Events are open to all. The IVV (Internationaler Volkssport Verband, or International Federation of Popular Sports) and AVA (American Volkssport Association, now re-branded as AVA: America’s Walking Club) sanction events (e.g., walking, biking, swimming, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing) that local clubs such as the Connecticut Valley Volkssport Club (CVVC) organize and support. AVA (and its affiliate clubs such as CVVC) is an educational nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

Vision, Mission and Values of AVA: America’s Walking Club

Our VISION is to increasingly engage Americans in lifelong walking and other noncompetitive physical fitness activities.

Our MISSION is to promote and organize noncompetitive fitness activities that encourage lifelong fun, fitness and friendship for all ages and abilities.

Our VALUES are health and safety, volunteering and public service, non-competitive and inclusive participation, adventure and camaraderie, transparency and accountability and environmental stewardship.

Walks (“volkswalks” or “volksmarches”) are, by far, the most popular form of volkssporting. Walks are typically 10k (6.2 mi.), often with a 5k (3.1 mi.) option, and may include historic sites, downtown areas, parks, woodland trails, and other points of interest. There are two different types of walks (also called “events”): 1) Year Round and Seasonal and 2) Traditional.

  1. Year Round Events (YREs) and Seasonal Events (SEs) operate on a self-service basis and are not staffed by volunteers. Participants can register (see page on registration via a Physical Walk Box or Online Start Box) and do the walk any time during daylight hours, generally any day of the week. Clubs such as CVVC organize “Group Walks” of their YRE and SE events, so that participants can walk together at a scheduled time. See the CVVC Calendar on the back page of this brochure.
  2. Traditional Events are typically a one-time event scheduled for a particular date (usually a Saturday) with a several-hour “start window” for people to register and participate. These events are staffed by volunteer club members and often draw walkers from many states. (CVVC does not currently have plans for hosting a Traditional Event this year.)
