Ocean Grove to view the beautiful Victorian homes and the Great Auditorium.
At the northern end of the walk, you will see magnificent homes in
Allenhurst and Loch Arbour.
Asbury Park is named after Francis Asbury, the founder of Methodism in America. From the early 20th century into the 1960’s, Asbury Park was a thriving beach resort. It is now in the midst of a revival with lots of interesting shops and art galleries along Cookman Avenue. On Saturday night, June 3, from 6PM to 10 PM, there will be a First Night celebration. Many of the shops and galleries along Cookman Avenue will be open, serving free refreshments and are open for business. It is always a fun evening and worth the stay. The walk in Asbury Park will take you to many historic sites. Walk will go on the boardwalk, (“The First Promenade Boardwalk”) which was built in 1880, through the Casino built in 1929 and the Convention Hall, both designed by architects Warren and Wetmore who also designed NY’s Grand Central Station. It was in front of the Convention Hall that there was the tragic shipwreck of the Morro Castle on Sept. 8. 1934. After the Convention Hall, you will pass the Stone Pony, which is the start of many famous musicians, notably Bruce Springsteen. You will also see a replica of the famous mural of “Tillie” the clown face. Walk passes the Berkeley Carteret Hotel, which opened in 1925; during World War II, it was home to the Royal British Navy and at one point was a naval hospital. Walk will also go on Grand Avenue, home to many of the city’s churches. |
