Mineral County, the county seat is Hawthorne, NV and was founded in 1911, formed from Esmeralda County.
H.M. Yerington named the new town Hawthorne after a lumberman, rancher, and law enforcement friend he knew in Carson City.

Although not a "ghostown" in the classic sense, Hawthorne is chock full of interesting history. The townsite of Hawthorne was selected in 1880 by H.M. Yerington, the president of the Carson and Colorado Railroad Company. Named for a lumberman friend in Carson City, Hawthorne was located near the busy Esmeralda toll road running from Wadsworth to Candelaria, from which radiating roads ran to all of the surrounding mining areas. Thus, it was the perfect location to place a division and distribution point for Mr. Yerington's new railroad. On April 14, 1881, the first train arrived, loaded with prospective buyers for the new town lots. As an interesting aside, the enterprising Mr. Yerington lent his name to another Nevada Town: Yerington, NV, an agricultural center located in Lyon County.
The Hawthorne Army Depot has a long history with several different units and frequently has been redesignated throughout the years. As a US Army ammunition storage depot, Hawthorne Army Depot receives, stores and issues munitions that are conventional. It’s also responsible for the demilitarization of obsolete, surplus and unserviceable equipment and munitions. These are inspected and renovated to ensure that they are ready to support the Joint Forces. The depot comprises 147,236 acres and has over 400 different buildings for storage and administration. There are also over 2,000 magazines that provide explosive storage up to a capacity of 7,685,000 square feet. The depot has a government staff that includes one soldier and 29 Department of Army civilians to provide oversight for the contractors who work the depot.

There are two 5K loops. You may do either or both.
These are small towns in Nevada, and the sidewalks may be few and far between. Please walk where you feel safe to do so, and be aware the town folks probably do not expect to see someone walking on the side of the road.
