Gator Volksmarsch Club

Community Walking Events in Southeast Virginia

A Few Words About Us

The Gator Volksmarsch Club is a member of the American Volkssport Association, AVA: America's Walking Club. We provide folks in Southeast Virginia with a large selection of noncompetitive walking events throughout the year. We were formed in 1978, were the first volksmarch club in Virginia, and the 13th club in the United States.

Fun

Volksmarches are fun walks, not races. Some walk fast, and some walk slow. The average time to complete the 10k course is a little more than two hours. Though some folks show up with their kids, and some bring their pets, nothing is required but a pair of good walking shoes and maybe a hat. You go at your own pace, and you are always a winner at the end.

Fitness

In the United States and around the world, walking is cited as the most popular physical activity among adults. Walkers are three times more likely to meet federal physical activity guidelines, and the U.S. Surgeon General has identified walking as the most beneficial form of exercise.

Friendship

Elaine and Clyde eagerly point out the many opportunities for camaraderie and friendship during club walks. And the friendships last long after the walk is over. “I never walk with the same person for an entire volksmarch,” Clyde says. “As my pace changes and those around me speed up or slow down, groups are constantly forming and reforming. It makes for interesting walks and terrific fellowship."
